I have enjoyed this past week, pottering around the house, catching up on many odd jobs and projects. Never venturing far from home….partly due to the plague of holiday people and mostly because I rarely get to have time to just do - stuff!

So I was originally going to do a quick Facebook post on this afternoon's project, but decided that it deserved a blog post of its own. Rather red-faced, it has been a long time between posts, so thought it was high time to write something hopefully interesting.

A quick trip to the local fruit and veg store this afternoon, saw me lugging in three bags of produce - mostly fruit for my new juicer. I quickly got started on my intended project, fresh orange juice. Now this is nothing spectacularly different, but wow, it tasted SO good, I wondered what else I could make with it? Then the light bulb thought of home-made orange cordial came to me……yes, that was it!

After a quick search on the net, I came across this recipe from Towards Sustainability and now that I have discovered this blog, I will no doubt be marking it as one of my must-reads on my iPad.

The finished product….so yummy!

The cordial was dead easy to make….simply mix sugar with water in a saucepan and dissolve over a low heat. Then add the fruit juice - I had fresh orange, but anything could be used. I also added some citric acid, to help preserve the mixture in the fridge, but I think when my son comes home, he will soon make short work of this batch. Now that I think of it, I might have to raid my mum's lemon tree to make a batch of lemon……yummy and refreshing!

So, why make your own?

1. It is delicious and unlike store bought orange cordial, it actually tastes like real fruit.

2. I know exactly what went into it……and exactly what didn't!

3. It is really cheap to make….I think it would have cost about one dollar for about a litre.

4. What a great way to use up any excess fruit! Many citrus trees are often overloaded with fruit.

5. I am happy for my son to drink this, in moderation of course!

6. Another great use for the juicer that I got for Christmas……smile.

Love my juicer!

Although I don't make New Year's resolutions, during my holiday I have been putting down the foundations for my Autumn veg crop and really aiming to grow as much of my own food as possible.

I have also been inspired to start making more home-made food, hopefully using much of my backyard harvest. There are zucchinis starting to grow huge overnight, ready to be included with some yummy pasta. I have a recipe for homemade spelt pasta, now I can give my dusty pasta maker a run for its money. Tomatoes are not far off…..can't wait to tuck into them!

It makes for a satisfying lifestyle, making and growing your own food. I would love to hear about your homemade, handmade and homegrown stories…..!

Cheers,

I hope everyone hung on to their hats last night, after our amazing 5.3 ish earth tremor? I was having dinner at a friend's house last night and after dinner we had sat down in the lounge room. She got up to put her son to bed and not long after my lounge chair started to shake. It was weird, because I initially thought she was playing a trick on me by rocking my chair, so I looked around only to find her gone from the lounge room. Then I thought that maybe the cat was climbing up the back of the chair, making it move? I didn't give it another thought until my sister messaged me about the tremor and it all made sense. What a weird feeling it is to feel the earth shake……sort of scary (luckily it was not a major tremor), a little bit exciting but also a strong feeling of helplessness, as it is beyond our control.

Anyway, I soon headed home to check that all was well and to make sure my pets were all safe. Our house is on stumps so it would have had a right royal shaking for sure!

I settled in to poke around the Internet, as I quite often do some nights. I clicked on the Contemporary Handmade Alliance website/blog which I had looked at briefly a couple of times before. This time, I went through a lot more of the blog and found some amazing information on it. The posts are sometimes written by guest contributors, each giving their own take on a certain subject and always filled with plenty of great advice. I was pleased to discover Ali from Cheeky Pickle had written a few posts.

So if you have a few spare moments, which will probably turn into an hour or two, there are some great tips, tricks and info for your own handmade business.

Enjoy.

Cheers,
OK, I do love winter, I really do…..but my toes are still frozen and I am sitting inside at my desk, with a scarf still wrapped around my neck……the fire is blazing but I am STILL cold!! Brrr!! On this foggy and frosty morning I think even the poor gas heater was struggling! I do not blame my clever cat Buster, who hopped under the covers on my bed, while my other cat Lynx, was attached to me like a magnet, trying to keep warm. Even with their lovely warm coats, they too are feeling the chill! Outside the sun is now out and my dog Basil is up on his trampoline, soaking up some rays like a glossy, slightly hairy, black solar panel!

So hopefully you have banished the cold and are basking in front of a warm heater. If so, I have some reading material of the crafty nature just for you!!
Here I am!!
Sorry about the lapse in blog posts over the past few weeks, but phew! it has been a busy time……we went off to Fiji…… then back home and holiday recovery, then off to Canberra last week….. now I am back home again, recovering from my few days of convention.

And I have to say, the weather here is worse than Canberra! I was expecting to freeze to death in our capital, but the weather was not too bad, crisp days and really chilly below zero nights, but altogether not so bad.

Not just paper goodies………..but gorgeous fabric samples too!!

So what did I get up to in Canberra? Well, if you can imagine 460-ish mad keen paper crafters, mostly Stampin' Up! demonstrators (including one gentleman demonstrator) all bursting with excitement, squealing, laughing, chatting and stampeding into the annual Stampin' Up! 2012 Convention, then you got it right!! Two and a half days of demonstrations, seminars, shopping, browsing gorgeous cards and scrapbooking examples, playing with new products…..oh and GIVEAWAYS!! Gorgeous giveaways galore!! Capped off by a lovely dinner and awards night. Ooooh it was so much fun!! I mean, seriously, it was just brilliant!!! If you love craft in any way, shape or form, you would have LOVED it!

Stampin' Up! put on a fantastic, professional and welcoming few days. We had staff out from the Home Office in Utah, USA and they were all so friendly and hilarious. Our Aussie staff were their usual lovely selves, keeping us entertained and looked after. So much was packed into two and a half days……..Well done to them all!!
The four of us had a fantastic Convention, lots of late night chatting and giggles…….somewhat exhausted most of the time…….fuelled up on Cola drinks and lots of chocolate……….absolute excitement about the new products coming our way in September…….and did I mention the giveaways? So, so cool! Oh and we had Teena's car, which we managed to fill with lots of goodies, and we got lost when we first arrived…….and got lost again. I have never seen so many huge roundabouts!! Even with using the GPS, Canberra is a tricky city to navigate!!

I would have loved to show you more lovely examples of the new products, but I am sworn to secrecy, so I can't post the gorgeous photos I have…….sorry ladies!!

See ya soon,

Cheers,
1. So, tell us about yourself……

I am obsessed with chocolate…I am a cake lover…I am a sweets connoisseur…I am a wife and mother of two who is trying to combine all things I am passionate about - a love for baking and creating cake "masterpieces" and my family.

I have the greatest memories of my grandmother and my mum baking and remember pulling at their apron strings asking to help, and of course lick the bowl! Cooking, baking, celebrating and sharing food is love in our family!

I started my working life in the corporate world, marketing for some of the major banks and insurance companies….and I was the one in the office that always brought in homemade treats to share at staff meetings and gatherings in the early days! I successfully worked my way up the corporate ladder for a good 15 years, while madly baking behind the scenes until a life changing move in 2008.

I am also a keen traveller and camper, so when I am not in the kitchen, you will find me exploring Australia with a campervan, kids and bikes in tow!

2. Why handmade?

Homemade food from scratch, with love and the finest quality ingredients tastes best! There is a huge difference in taste between shop bought and homemade, not to mention home baked usually averages 6 ingredients…..shop bought can have up to 40 ingredients, mainly preservatives, colours and chemicals that do nothing more than increase shelf life.

There is a quality in handmade, not just in cakes, but craft, sewing, art and the like, something you can't get at the major stores or through mass-produced channels. I love the effort and patience people put into handmade. It can't be beaten.

3. What influenced you to start your business?

It was a desert change! We moved our family from Mornington to Alice Springs in 2008, at a time when we were looking to inject something different into our lives. Before the move, I was travelling in and out of the city from Mornington each day and found myself dreaming of living a life where I could do what makes me smile each day, be involved in my children's life and the community - not sitting on a train for 3 hours a day, madly rushing from one thing to another.

The move to Alice Springs was amazing! It changed our thinking and life goals and forced us to look at our lives differently. I decided a complete career change was overdue and to live a more authentic life doing what I love so much - baking. I started off catering to workplaces for morning teas and brunches in Alice Springs, with a selling point of "made from scratch" and word spread quickly. The catering work afforded me some petty cash to fund some further training with Planet Cake in Sydney, to be able to concentrate on my first love, bespoke cakes and cupcakes. When we moved back home at Christmas in 2010, I relaunched The Cake Table and haven't looked back.

I am also "a little" addicted to the feedback and joy I get from people who eat and enjoy my creations.

4. What type of products do you sell?

Bespoke, individually handmade and homemade from scratch, special occasion cakes and cupcakes. Anything from delicate wedding cakes with handmade roses to Thomas the Tank novelty cakes and cupcakes.

5. What are your inspirations for making your products?

As with most art, inspiration is everywhere. From a beautiful flower you pass on the way to dropping the kids at school, or some of the gorgeous greeting cards out there, or even a movie. I recently saw The Lorax and could not stop looking at the trees in the movie, I am sure they will make it onto one of my cakes soon!

I also believe in homemade/handmade and want to make sure the traditional continues in my family and my customers, so this inspires me to grow my business.

6. Where do you sell your products?

The majority of my cakes are wedding cakes, so they are arranged by appointment and tastings. I also take orders for cupcakes and birthday cakes via phone, email and Facebook, as well as the occasional local market or school event.

7. How much time do you spend making your products each week?

Every week is different, depending on the cake designs, but it averages around 25 hours a week.

8. Do you have a dedicated craft area or studio in your home?

9. Are you self taught or have you had a good teacher?

My cake decorating journey began over 20 years ago in a cold church hall in the back blocks of Geelong, learning old style skills such as lace work and brush embroidery, from amazing ladies in the Cake Decorating Association of Victoria. However, cake decorating has changed enormously since then, and over time, lots of my skills have come from playing around in the kitchen and trying out new things. Along with more recently, the occasional training with some of the amazing cake schools and teachers that have began to visit Melbourne in the last few years.

Gawk here!!Today I have stumbled across an absolute gem of crafty inspiration, but be warned, don't look at it until you have cleared an afternoon in your diary…..or put the kids to bed.

It is vast!! And exciting!! And I love it!!

It is ……drumroll……..www.craftgawker.com !!! LOVE the name too…..

Wow and yee hah. It is sort of like Pinterest, but for craft! A must for all you crafty peeps out there!

It is easy to navigate, the photography is really lovely and some of the projects threaten to take up much of my precious spare time. When you click on a photo, it takes you through to a blog, or tutorial or website. Or this is what is supposed to happen….I had a bit of trouble opening the links, they seemed to take forever……fingers tapping……..ho hum.

Apart from the links taking what seems like hours to open…….am I doing something wrong?……..it is a great website and full of inspirational projects and ideas. The site has strict guidelines and commercial sites are not accepted as links, so no linking through to online shops, etc. The photography is of a really good standard and any submissions to the site must be approved. I like their style! I have registered for an account, so I can now get into some serious gawking!

Enjoy your gawking!

Cheers,
Today I have done all of that, I think it is a great way of respecting this special Australian day. I am now sitting at my desk next to our wood heater, which is blazing along nicely with a sleepy cat curled up in front of it.

Now for a late Meet the Maker post on this chilly Autumn night......about a month ago I met Lauren from Love a Rhino at a local market and was instantly taken with her gorgeous wall art. I am pleased to share some of Lauren's thoughts with you......
Questions:

1. So, tell us about yourself......
I'm a 20 something, stay at home Mum to two rambunctious boys aged 5 and 2 1/2. I live with my family (hubby, 2 boys, Labrador and 6 chickens) in Karingal. Before my youngest son was born, I was a vet nurse and though I love being home with my boys, I do miss working with animals (they don't tend to talk back quite so much, I've noticed).

2. Why handmade?
I've always loved creating unique pieces (I have vivid memories of sewing furry pencil cases in high school and selling them for extra money). I think that something that's been lovingly made by hand, is always more special and treasured.

3. What influenced you to start your business?
I was having a hard time finding artwork for my boys' rooms that was unique, fun, not too "cutesie" and didn't cost an arm and a leg, so I decided to create my own! I then made a few prints as gifts for friend's new babies and was constantly being told that they had people asking where they could get their own. I decided to list a few designs on madeit.com.au and see what happened from there.

4. What type of products do you sell?
I offer a range of modern, personalised wall art, for nurseries, kid's rooms and the home. Our speciality are our Personalised Birth Stat Wall Prints, which are popular as gifts.
5. What are your inspirations for making your products?
I draw inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. I love, love, love magazines and websites dedicated to children's room/nursery design. I have a slight (*cough all-encompassing *cough) addiction to Pinterest at the moment and I find its a great place to draw inspiration.

I sell prints both online on my website and madeit.com.au…..and at various markets.
This depends entirely upon my boys, especially the youngest. I'd say on average, 10 hours a week, but this increases if I have a market coming up.

8. Do you have a dedicated craft area or studio in your home?
I wish!! Most of my designing/printing is done either sitting on the couch or at the dining table! Though I currently have grand plans for a closet that once housed our European Laundry (thank you Pinterest!)
9. Are you self taught or have you had a good teacher?
I'm self taught. I started off with digital scrapbooking, which evolved into designing invitations and went from there.
Plus the thought of a full day of gardening was filling me with dread, so I made a quick getaway to the Boneo Market for a couple of hours. The familiar "be back soon" was sang out as I happily strolled out to my car.

Kid free and heading to a market! I felt a bit lucky as I drove in to park my car. As soon as I got into the crowd, I couldn't help thinking how lovely this local market is. It still has that little bit of country feel to it and I always bump into one, two or more local people I know.

As always I had a lovely chat to some local makers.....I always have a good gas-bag and plenty of laughs with Julie from My Sweet Florence and Marnie from Marnie Louanne. I was delighted to find a gathering of local talent under the name of Crabapple Cottage Crafts, well done girls!! After a couple of hours of browsing and chatting, I left with my fresh strawberries, free range eggs and yummy risotto balls which we had for tea last night.
Upon arrival, Judy gave me a warm welcome and I presented her with two linen tablecloths I had made for her stock displays. The studio smelt so lovely, the gorgeous aroma of essential oils was a pleasant and uplifting environment to work in.
We were each given a kit to use on the day, consisting of an apron, safety goggles, stainless steel saucepan, candy thermometer, whisk and jugs. A soap recipe sheet and general information was very useful to refer to during the class and we took these home to use for future soap making. Judy gave a talk on soap making, to let us know a bit about the whole process.

Next came the part where the goggles came out.....mixing the lye. Caustic soda is added to water (it is IMPORTANT not to do it the other way around and add water to caustic soda!!!!).......a chemical reaction occurs when the two are mixed, causing the mixture to heat up very quickly. Chemical burns can occur if the mixture is splashed on skin. The use of safety gear is imperative in this stage. Goggles, protective clothing and gloves are a good start, if you are thinking of making your own soap. We added a small amount of frozen goats milk to the lye mix and whisked it all together. The mix was then put in a water bath to bring it down to a similar temperature as the oils. We then added the lye mixture to the oils and starting mixing with an electric stick mixer......once the soap mixture reached a point where it left a trail on top (this is called "trace") then it was ready to pour into a greased mould.

Once the soap was cut, I placed it on a cake rack, where it will sit for 6 weeks. During this time the soap will cure.
SO excited!! Tomorrow, I am lucky enough to be trialling out a new soap making class! Judy from Gunbower Creek Olives in Rye, is starting up these classes soon and I get to be one of the the guinea pig students! Yay! Soap making is something that has interested me for the past few years and although I have read lots about it and even have books about it, I have never taken that nervous leap into making my own.

Soap making has been around for thousands of years, the earliest records are from Babylonia in 2800 BC. It was once a common practise in the home kitchen, to whip up batches of homemade soap for household use. And then came along commercial soap factories.

For the last few years, I have only been using handmade soaps from markets or liquid castille soap from my local health food store, steering well clear of cheap and scary commercial stuff. An added bonus is that I am putting a lot less chemicals on my skin.......always a good thing!! I have found that my skin is not as dry, due to the lovely glycerin content in these soaps.

Glycerin is present in natural fats so it makes sense to leave it in soap for its moisturising qualities.
You can see in this simple equation: oil + lye = soap + glycerin.

Commercial soap has the glycerin removed from it and then the glycerin is sold off as a by-product. Although commercial soaps have super lathering powers (probably due to synthetic detergents), I find they dry my skin horribly........snake skin is not a good look!!

So tomorrow's class will be fantastic and I have been looking forward to it for weeks. I hope to take some pictures to post up tomorrow.........so stay tuned.

Have a great day!

Cheers,

A little while ago, I posted about making your own laundry liquid. A week or so ago, I had ran out of my usual box of eco laundry powder.....actually I was eagerly awaiting the finish of it, as I wanted to return to making my own homemade laundry liquid. It has been too long since I made a batch, so I took myself off to the supermarket for a couple of ingredients I was getting low on.

And I have made a tutorial with some of my step-by-step photos....just for you!! I hope it makes sense.....ok here goes!

Homemade Laundry Liquid
Method:
Measure the 750mls of water and empty into saucepan. Add the Lux flakes to the water. Over a medium heat, stir the soap until dissolved completely and the mixture is clear. Ensure the soap is dissolved, to prevent the mixture separating once cooled. Now add the washing soda and borax to soap mixture. Stir until thickened and then remove from heat. The mixture will resemble thick milky glue.
Add 5 litres of hot tap water to the 10 litre plastic bucket. Now pour your thickened mixture from the saucepan into the hot water.
As the mixture cools, it will thicken. I like to give it a stir every 10 or 15 minutes, to ensure a smooth combined liquid. Once the mixture is completely cool, you can add your essential oil for fragrance. I used pure Lemongrass essential oil, which gives a great fresh aroma. Lavender oil is another favourite of mine.
For storage, I poured most of mine into a 5 litre water storage container (with a wide opening for easy pouring). The rest of it I poured into a recycled coffee jar and added some jute twine for decoration. Give the plastic container a good shake to mix liquid, before topping up your jar. I use 1/4 cup of this laundry liquid per load in my front loader.
N.B. As this recipe contains Borax, it may not be suitable for Grey Water use on gardens.

I have been using this for a over a week now and it is really doing a great job. For only 2 or 3 dollars, it makes just over 5 litres of laundry liquid which will last ages! Plus there are no nasty chemical fillers like commercial laundry detergent. I hope my tutorial has inspired you to make your own batch. I would love to hear how it turned out!!
Questions:

1. So, tell us about yourself?

I have recently moved to Melbourne from Brisbane, with my husband, who is in the Australian Defence Force. I studied marketing at QUT and I used to work at a major department store as a Sales Assistant and in-store Visual Merchandiser. I love Op Shopping (a little too much) and like to spend my time making accessories for my LATG label.

2. Why handmade?

I have always been interested in anything handmade - how the item is designed and constructed. It amazes me at what people can make - the skills needed and the time taken. Handmade is always more special and I like the idea that something was made from raw materials and turned into a beautiful or useful product.

3. What influenced you to start your business?

Being addicted to your craft means you have A LOT of it accumulating in the house. As much as your want to keep it all, it's nice to share it with other people. I liked the idea of having my own little enterprise and being able to control and steer it in any direction. I also liked the idea of crafting a little world that was my own. Reactions form friends, family and strangers are always a great motivator too.

4. What types of products do you sell?

At the moment I sell handmade resin jewellery, scarves and cushions. I really want LATG to specialise in fashion and home accessories. I'm a little obsessed with fabric at the moment, so expect more scarves, cushions and throw rugs.

5. What are your inspirations for making your products?

My inspiration comes from everywhere. If I like something (a colour, shape or style), I will try and reflect it in something I make. I tend to move toward simple styles that can be mixed and matched. My family upbringing has been a major influence too. My mother has always inspired a vintage look with her English background; whereas my dad inspires more Asian design with his Chinese Malaysian nationality. In saying that, sometimes, I like to go completely modern - it really depends on my mood.

6. Where do you sell your products?

I mainly sell my products through Facebook and word-of-mouth. I am trying to attend more markets around Melbourne so I can really get my wares known.

7. How much time do you spend making your products each week?

Well, seeing as I am still looking for casual employment, I get to spend heaps of time making things. Generally the resin jewellery will take from one day to a week, to completely cure and sand them. My cushions don't take too long, so I can get a few done a week. The scarves are my current addiction, so I try and make a couple per day.

8. Do you have a dedicated craft area or studio in your home?

I do have a large room toward the back of the house that I dedicate to my market set-up and sewing. With resin jewellery, I need a well-ventilated area, so this works perfectly. The annoying part is that the room is open plan and is right next to the kitchen, so I get tempted to snack when I should be working.

9. Are you self taught or have you had a good teacher?

Everything I have done has been self taught. I think trial and error is a great way to learn, as well as discovering new ways to do things. Some of my best ideas have come from stuffing up! I do research on the Internet a fair bit if I need to know how to do something on the sewing machine.

What a day it was! A good friend asked me at the last minute, to share a stall with her. Hence the mad rush on Friday night to get some sort of paper crafting demonstration stall together.

Now Saturday was a fairly blustery day in downtown Hastings and paper crafting in the wind brought along some interesting challenges! Our stall started off looking all pretty for about five minutes, until gust after gust of that nasty wind rearranged it and sent gift boxes, cards and paper hurtling to the ground.

Teena papercrafting in the wind......DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

As you all know, I dabble in several crafty obsessions. Most of the time I muddle through, each time learning more and more as I go. After lunch at Craft Fest, I slipped away to meet some of the other demonstrators.....and I was curious to see what other crafts were on show. A lot of the ladies were very experienced and had been crafting for many more years than me.......and yes, it showed! I was seriously impressed by the quality of the many crafts on show. Just look at the work by Jennifer Lewis pictured below:
I think the most amazing craft I watched on the day was the ladies from Mt Eliza Lace Group and their lace demonstration. These ladies are just so talented and the work is extremely intricate. The weather this week has been brilliant...and my pile of washing is now gone, thanks to these sunny Autumn days. Cool evenings, dewy mornings and sunshine, my absolute favourite time of year by far. To top it all off, Port Phillip bay has been calm and still, so beautiful to look at from our front deck......what a gorgeous place our Peninsula is!!!

So, down to the business at hand. Last Sunday, I planned a quick visit to the Huckleberry Market at the Peninsula Community theatre in Mornington. As usual, I headed out the door telling my worse half that I would "be back shortly". As I made my escape, I am sure I heard him sniggering in the background? Ok, so I may have stretched the truth a tiny bit. I really had planned a quick peek around, a quick hello or two, a couple of photos and out the door fairly soon after all that. Didn't happen.

I love going to any sort of market and if I have the chance, I will amble around them, browsing and oohing and aaahing to my heart's content. I did have a quick browse around this time, but kept getting caught up with stallholders and before I knew it, a one minute chat had grown to a five or ten minute chat. Multiply that by at least a half dozen........and bingo! Two and a half hours disappeared in a flash, as my "be back shortly" comment keep rearing its annoying head up in my mind.
So much going on in the world of handmade here on the Peninsula. Saturday brought around my very own Leukaemia Foundation Papercrafting Fundraiser. Needless to say, I was running around like a headless chook right up until starting time - bringing craft equipment down from my studio, setting out the worktables, preparing last minute kits for the ladies to use, forgetting things, forgetting more things and running up to the studio for them for what seemed like the umpteenth time......!

1pm came around and we started not long after this. Beginning with a somewhat nervous me, rattling off some garbled speech (always nervous at the beginning, lol) and then I settled into speaking mostly sense for the rest of the afternoon......I hope? Anyway, in my roundabout way, I guided the girls through four projects, with only a couple of hiccups along the way.... (this involved a couple of trips to backyard studio for more forgotten things). A couple of ladies were fairly new to paper crafting, others a bit more experienced and the lovely Teena helped out where needed. At the end of the day, it was lovely to see that everyone had thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks girls!!

Mid way, we stopped for an amazing afternoon tea, very kindly served up and attended to by my Mum's cousin, Lorraine. There was quite an array of homemade goodies on offer, so OK, the diet got put on hold.

At the end of the day, we drew the raffle tickets and everyone got to win a great prize, thanks to the kind Donations from Stampin' Up Australia. During the day I also gave out some spot prizes and a brilliant door prize was won by lucky Joan!

So far, we have raised just over $500.00 and there may be one or two more donations to come in this week hopefully. Then it is off to the bank for a cheque to send off to the Leukaemia Foundation. I want to thank those ladies (and children) who gave me their time on Saturday and to those who gave donations because they were unable to attend.

We finished four projects, as pictured below. A neutral coloured easel card with embossing detail and die cut flowers, a pink card with an embossed die cut background with punched and stamped flower, a gift box with wheel stamped pattern and a smaller gift box which was embossed and antiqued with ink.
Questions:

1. So, tell us about yourself.......
I am very fortunate to have grown up on the Mornington Peninsula, enjoying all its great places and spaces as a kid. While I have always loved working with fabrics for my own pleasure, it wasn't until I became a mum that I seriously considered giving it a stronger presence in my life. I was a Sales Manager in IT and felt that the time had come, as well as listening to the encouragement of my friends and family, to recognise my creative side just a little more. So, these days I enjoy creating children's clothing and baby furnishings under my label "Vintage Ruby", while spending quality time with my 2 beautiful children, Lachlan 7 and Ruby 3. They keep me on my toes, especially my 3 year old. And they also keep me forever road testing my products.

2. Why handmade?
There is something uniquely special about receiving a handmade gift, knowing that someone has put their heart and soul into creating it for you. Even more so for personalised gifts......these are the gifts you treasure forever. Given that I work with vintage material quite a bit, I love that my items have a story to tell, even before I have finished with them.

3. What influenced you to start your business?
For as long as I have been able to, I have been making gifts for friends and family. I used to crochet baby blankets, but they used to take me a while. It was on the way to visit a friend with a new baby and I was racing to finish a blanket in the car, that I realised I needed to do something different. My husband bought me a sewing machine and that was it! I started making rag quilts and I was able to whip one up pretty quickly. I then discovered vintage chenille bedspreads and fell in love.....actually, it borders on obsession with over 70 bedspreads in my collection. My friends were on my back to start selling them, so I decided to start my own business and haven't looked back since!

4. What type of products do you sell?
I sell giftware for babies and toddlers mainly. Most of my products incorporate vintage, recycled or new fabrics. I make quilts, chenille dresses, bibs, burp cloths, bags, buntings, hats and framed pictures.

5. What are your inspirations for making your products?
I am constantly inspired by the creativity of others. I have so many ideas, but don't always have the "free" time to play around with them. I am also inspired by the spontaneity and innocence of children.

6. Where do you sell your products?
My range of products is currently available at MP Kids in Dromana ( a huge supporter of local handmade ) and previously at Miss Kitty's in Red Hill, but sadly they have since closed. There are some annual markets that I do, but I sell most of my products through word of mouth.

7. How much time do you spend making your products each week?
It all depends on what I have on at the time and how many orders are coming through. Usually I spend at least a few days a week sewing. As I mentioned earlier, my children keep me busy, so most of my sewing is done at night.

8. Do you have a dedicated craft area or studio in your home?
I wish!! Unfortunately, like so many in the craft industry, I don't. I do all of my cutting out at my kitchen table and all of my sewing in my bedroom. I sew at my dressing table and lay my work out on the bed. It's not unusual for me to be sewing a 3 o'clock in the morning. My poor husband has learnt to sleep through it, often oblivious to the fabrics draped over him....

9. Are you self taught or have you had a good teacher?
I am self taught.....my mum showed me how to use a sewing machine when I was young, but didn't really get into it until my husband bought me my own. I've really enjoyed the journey so far.

My gorgeous Mum turns 70 tomorrow, so it is a big family bash to celebrate this wonderful event.....my poor sister is hosting it but we are all pitching in to help with food and necessary party goods.

Sunday brings my first kid's paper craft party....EEK!!! ......My friend thought it would be a lovely theme for a birthday party and booked me to do it. I will be helping 6 little girls and 2 boys to make a scrapbook page, a bookmark and a handmade greeting card. I am looking forward to it immensely. I have asked that each child brings a photo of themselves to include on the scrapbook page.....then they get to decorate it with punch and die cut shapes, textured and patterned paper, etc. I will take some pics and show you next week!!

Just one last post for this week, with an assortment of local products to explore!
There is bunting galore as an attempt to set a new World Record for "the longest bunting joining two schools" takes place! Sorrento Primary School and St Josephs Primary School have joined forces in trying to smash the existing record of 2, 737.72 metres, held by Malbank Secondary School and Sixth Form College, in Cheshire, UK. The record was set in November 2010. The Sorrento schools are aiming to produce a whopping 4000-5000 metres of bunting, which should most certainly secure the record!!

The idea was the brainchild of the Fete Committee, who wanted a unique project to inspire community spirit. The two primary schools are having a combined Fete this Saturday March 10 and the bunting will be displayed for all to see. The bunting production has been a community effort, with kids and mums getting busy with their sewing machines.

Guinness World Records has set strict guidelines for the size of each flag - 19cm across the top and 29cm down each side, with a gap of no more than 5cm between each flag! A qualified surveyor has to measure the total length and two independent witnesses need to verify the flag sizes. Kevin Sheaves from Coastal Surveys has kindly offered his time to measure up the attempt. A local Police Officer and a Pharmacist have kindly agreed to be witnesses. The record will be recorded and statements sent off to verify the World Record Attempt. The official word does not come for around 5-6 weeks, so fingers crossed and good luck to both schools!! A great effort!
I wish both schools all the best of luck in their record attempt.
If you are in the area this Saturday, be sure to pop into the Fetes and support our local schools! The approximately 16000 flags on display should be a sight to behold!!

Cheers,
Questions:

1. So, tell us about yourself.......
I'm a wife, a mum to 4 year fold Mietta and now, a business owner and crazily, a crafty sewer!

2. Why handmade?
I've always felt handmade items have so much more meaning than mass produced items. It's the love and care that goes into every stitch, and of course the unique designs and the quality.

3. What influenced you to start your business?
2 years ago, my husband asked me what I'd like for Christmas and I said "A sewing machine". Such a joke in our family, as I have never shown the slightest interest in sewing! My intention was to make clothes for my daughter, but I thought I would start with a soft toy elephant as both my daughter and husband love elephants. I wasn't quite happy with the pattern, so I adapted it, found some funky fabric and it became an EleFunk! Personalising them for friends who had babies became the next step. I gave them as gifts for 18 months and then people started asking me to make them for them to give to friends. By the way, I never did make those clothes for my daughter!

4. What type of products do you sell?
Funky cushions, soft toys and bunting flags. All can be personalised.

5. What are your inspirations for making your products?
My daughter has an unusual name which I knew I wouldn't find on any commercially made items, so I wanted to make things I could put her name on to. Aside from that, I wanted kids items that were bright and funky and that would brighten up a child's room.

6. Where do you sell your products?
On my Facebook page and at markets around Melbourne. Currently I'm at Mornington Racecourse market, Red Hill Community market, and I will be at Mathilda's Market and Huckleberry Market in months to come.

7. How much time do you spend making your products each week?
Depends if it's the week before a market or not! I sew almost every day, always trying to balance it as second to my family.

8. Do you have a dedicated craft area or studio in your home?
I do now!! Our billiard table used to be used for billiards, now it has a cover that was designed as a cutting table for me. We used to have an office/study too, but the laptop has been relegated to the far corner to make room for three sewing machines!

9. Are you self taught or have you had a good teacher?
I'm mostly self taught, although my mum does sew and has given me some good tips along the way.
